Behavioral and Neurodiversity Specialist
On-site specialist available to provide a space for children needing a state break or behavioral support during camps. This person would staff both: a medical station and a behavioral or special needs safe-space with books, crafts, stories, games etc to provide care as needed. Only basic first aid would be administered at camp; anything serious will involve immediately contacting parents and if necessary 911.
As we can never predict if or when we will have campers needing this station, the B&N Specialist would be available to assist the Director or Assistant Director until or unless a camper needs them.
● Strong interest in supporting children with special needs
● Proof of education, training, certifications, and/or real world professional experience in dealing with neurodiverse children and behavioral issues
Key Responsibilities for ALL Summer Camp Staff and Volunteers:
● Ensure the safety of each child
● Maintain high energy level, enthusiasm, and engagement every day at camp
● Listen to campers and encourage them to share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas when appropriate
● Learn, participate, and lead by example in all songs, skits, activities, etc
● Teach social and emotional skills based on daily and weekly themes
● Introduce activities and encourage students to voice their questions
● Demonstrate skills and provide feedback for children
● Ensure equipment is properly treated, used, and stored
● Develop a relationship with students and parents
● Complete our Online Camp Training program prior to camp and attend scheduled in-person training
● Ensure our parks are kept clean and unspoiled
● Perform first aid or take care of injuries as needed
● Record in writing all incidents, accidents, and actions necessary
Qualifications and Skills:
● Passion, patience, and a love for teaching children, as well as the ability to lead, inspire, and direct them
● Willingness to lead, embrace, and embody the imaginative, adventurous, and magical experience we are creating for our campers
● Excellent team player and communicator
● Reliable, punctual, and helpful
● Energetic and positive personality
● First aid- and CPR-certified preferred
IMPORTANT NOTE: We’re running 10 weeks of camp at Carkeek Park and 3 weeks at Seward Park. Therefore we prioritize staff applications based on the number of weeks to which you are willing to commit. For training, hiring, logistics, and consistency, we
MUCH prefer one staff member for 10 weeks than 5 staff members for 2 weeks each!
Camp Details:
Camps run from 9:00 to 3:00 (4:30 for after care participants), which means 8:15am to 3:45pm for most of our staff. We will have station coaches running dedicated activity stations, and counselors (either alone or with an assistant depending on group size) leading campers from station to station in addition to doing other activities with them. We will also be adding more tradition and culture to the experience, with one or two large group meetings a day where we will play games, tell stories, sing silly songs off key (with silly dances and accompanying hand gestures), make up songs and have fun!
Station Coaches will be assigned to one station each week, where they will run 4-5 40-50min sessions each day. Each station will have a theme, with movement skills as well as story-driven, episodic movement games. Campers will be in groups of 10 or 16, and will have a Summer Camp Counselor
(and for larger groups: an Assistant) with them at all times, taking them from station to station. Counselors and Assistants will have more opportunities to bond with their individual campers, and lead them in games, activities, and discussions of the themes and stories presented throughout the session.
We are also seeking applicants for a childhood Behavioral and Neurodiversity Specialist to provide additional support as needed, and Volunteers to help wherever help is needed either supporting a station or a group of campers for half or full day shifts each week!
